The Royal Deputation
The Order is governed by the Grand Master, assisted by the Royal Deputation, from which the Government Council of the Order is derived. The members of the Royal Deputation are appointed by the Grand Master and their office ceases upon his death. The high dignitaries of the Order—the Grand Prefect (who represents the Grand Master during his minority, illness, or absence), the Vice-Grand Prefect, the President of the Royal Deputation, the Grand Chancellor, the Vice-Grand Chancellor, the Grand Prior, the Vice-Grand Priors, the Auditor General, the Vice-Auditor General, as well as the Grand Treasurer and Secretary—are members of the Royal Deputation. The Presidents of the Royal Commissions, together with those other members of the Order who, by reason of their exceptional merit, are appointed as Counsellors by the Grand Master himself, likewise form part of it.
